How to read your electricity bill

An electricity bill can look unreadable, but only a few lines really matter. Here is where to look.

What to find first

  • The amount due and the period it covers.
  • Your provider's name and the type of offer (fixed or variable price).
  • The POD code, which identifies your meter (it starts with IT).
  • Your contracted power in kW: for many homes it is 3 kW.

What the cost is made of

  • Energy: the electricity you use, plus the provider's fixed fees. This is the part that changes from one offer to another.
  • Transport and meter management: network costs set by national rules and the same for every provider.
  • System charges: general costs of the electricity system, also regulated.
  • Taxes: excise duty and VAT.

What to really compare

The lines your provider decides are the energy price (euros per kWh) and the monthly fixed fee. The others are the same for everyone, so changing provider does not alter them.

Fixed or variable price

With a fixed price, the energy cost stays as written in the contract for the stated period. With a variable (indexed) price it follows the market and can go up or down. Also check how long the offer lasts and whether there is a lock-in or an exit penalty.

Watch out for discounts

A discount or bonus valid only for the first months is not a stable saving: what matters is what you pay when it ends. That is why we show them separately.

If you can't find a figure

No problem: upload the bill or give us the total and the months it covers. We estimate what's missing and tell you how reliable the estimate is.

Are you paying the right price?

Upload your bill: we tell you whether switching is worth it, and if it isn't, we tell you that too.
